SO WHAT EXACTLY IS A VIRTUAL RACE, ANYWAY?
Ok, so here’s the deal. A “virtual” is a race just like any other, except there’s no official race location. You register for the race and then you run during the designated race weekend: when you want, where you want; and then just submit the results on the convenient online form when you’re done. All the results will be compiled and sent out to all participants after the race is over. Any pictures or stories to accompany your official time are encouraged as well!
WHEN IS IT?:
The official race weekend is Friday, October 14th thru Sunday, Oct. 16th.
WHAT DO I DO?:
Like I said above, in order to participate, all you need to do is register for the race or races you want, run at any point during the long weekend of 10/14 – 10/16, and then submit your results. (All the specific race details, along with a link to submit your results will be sent out to you with your registration confirmation…Along with an invite to submit any pictures or stories about the experience you’d like to share)
WHAT DO I GET/ WHAT’S IN IT FOR ME?:
Every race participant gets (final details still being secured for participant medals). That, plus the satisfaction of knowing that all profits from the races are being donated directly to St. Luke’s University Health Network; so all your sweat and effort is not only doing you good, but others as well.
SO HOW MUCH DOES THIS COST?
All this for the low-low price of $25.00 for the first race, and $5 for each additional race!
HUH? I’M GOING TO NEED YOU TO EXPLAIN THAT ONE A LITTLE MORE…
Ok, so if you are running one race with us, the 5K for instance, it’ll run you $25. If you want to replicate one of the popular race combo options offered by Runner’s World at their Annual Half & Festival Weekend it will increase the entry fee.
So lets say you want to run the Hat Trick, which is a 5K, a 10K, and a Half Marathon all in one weekend. That’s 3 races in total. $25 for the first race (5K), and then $5 each for the other two races (10K and The Half), bringing your entry fee up to $35. You with me?

SO, WHAT’S THIS “SUB-30 CLUB” ANYWAY?
The Sub 30 Club is a running group started by Ted Spiker and hosted on Facebook. Ted writes The Big Guy Blog for Runner’s World. He uses it as a forum to share his fitness goals and journey to accomplish them. In April, 2012, Ted decided to take this a step further. He wanted to create a place where like-minded people with similar goals could meet to share those goals and cheer each other on to meeting them.What started as a club of people attempting to run a 5K in less than 30 minutes has evolved into a thriving community of runners of all abilities chasing down their goals, from 5Ks to Half and Full marathons to Ultra Marathons and Obstacle Course Races to 200 Mile Relays to Qualifying for Boston. While Sub-30 still refers to the 5K distance, it has come to represent a mindset, a mentality of Positivity, Motivation, and Support as you chase down your goals. Whatever those goals may be.

In the span of four plus years the group has grown to over 4,200 members from all around the world. People from all walks of life with the same, simple goal of doing things they never thought they could while helping others do the same.
At Runner’s World Festival and Half 2014, Sub 30 Club had 69 registered participants. Runner’s World 2015: 130 registered runners. Not only were we the largest, but we were the most vocal as well. We have a saying in the Sub 30: No Subber Left Behind. It’s a motto we take to heart and practice every day. Whatever we can do to help our fellow runners reach their goals we will do it. Almost a year later people are still commenting to members about seeing us on the course in our club shirts and what a positive presence we had at the event. Because of the feedback we have received we wanted to come back to this year’s event bigger and better. We currently have 127 people registered for at least one event over the weekend.
We also wanted to do more than just be a presence. We want to have an impact. And what better way to do that than to help raise money for St. Luke’s, the official charity for the event. This virtual race will allow those of us attending the event, as well as those Sub 30 Club members who are not able to attend the event, to do something wonderful that weekend.
Whether you’re a Sub 30 Club member or not, we will leave no person behind.
SO DO I NEED TO BE ABLE TO RUN A 5K IN UNDER 30 MIN (SUB-30) TO BE A MEMBER OF THE CLUB?
To put it simply: No, you do not have to be able to run a Sub-30 5K to join us.
If you already can, awesome, join us. If you are not there yet, awesome, join us.
All you really have to do is:
1) Be a runner (of ANY capacity: 6 min/mile, 16 min/mile, whatever… runners are runners and we all have each other’s backs)
2) Be ready to engage in some conversations with some pretty great people. (The members of this group are pretty awesome, and from this one guy’s perspective, the people are where the value and attractiveness –and addictiveness?- of the group comes from. Any sort of info, from running basics, to shoes to nutrition to weight loss to whatever either has been brought up or will be welcomed and discussed by people who can offer sound advice and perspectives in a non-pretentious and supportive manner). DO I NEED TO BE A MEMBER OF THE SUB-30 CLUB TO REGISTER FOR ANY OF THE RACES?
No. But one of the functions of this race is to help spread the word about our amazing group and bring in some more like-minded members. If that’s you, check us out, I’m pretty sure you’ll be glad you did…and even if you are not the “facebook running group” type of person, that’s fine. You are still more than welcome to participate, because the primary reason that we are running this race is to raise money for charity. Which leads me to my next question:
WHY EXACTLY ARE YOU DOING THIS? WHO ARE THE RACE PROFITS BENEFITING?
We are doing this to benefit the official race partner of the Runner’s World Half Marathon, St. Luke’s University Health Network’s Healthy Kids

St. Luke’s University Health Network’s Healthy Kids- Bright Futures is excited to be the official charity partner of the 5th Annual Runner’s World Half & Festival.
Our goal is for all children to have healthy lives and bright futures. Therefore, all funds raised through your contributions will benefit youth health initiatives within St. Luke’s region of care. These community programs and initiatives include:
The HealthStar Mobile Youth Clinic Program – providing medical, dental, and vision services to underserved youth communities.
Community Health Centers – providing health care programs within area elementary school and in-patient pediatric health programs.
KidsCare Centers – providing care to children without insurance.
Reading Rocks – promoting the love of reading and success in school.
Get Your Tail on the Trail and Live Your Life – encouraging health and wellness, as well as balanced nutrition.
Every dollar you contribute to St. Luke’s Healthy Kids – Bright Futures makes a difference! Take a look at how your donation makes an impact in St. Luke’s youth health and wellness programs:
A $5 donation provides a toothbrush and toothpaste to a child who doesn’t have them.
A $10 donation provides books to encourage the love of reading.
A $15 donation provides healthy after school snacks during the Reading Rocks program.
A $20 donation provides dental sealants to prevent cavities.
A $25 donation provides a backpack filled with school supplies.
A $100 donation provides a vision screening and eyeglasses to a child in need.
To give you an idea of what we are looking to do here, last year we were able to raise $4,000 for the charity. $4,000. That’s 800 toothbrushes, 160 backpacks, or 40 vision screenings and glasses to kids who need them.
…that’s an awful lot of toothbrushes.
Let me be clear, the goal for this year is to BEAT last year’s $4,000 total.
WHO IS CHARITY MILES AND HOW DO THEY FACTOR INTO ALL OF THIS?
To further prove my point about really getting on board with the charitable efforts, we are also partnering up with Charity Miles, and I could not be more excited about it. Let me explain. Charity Miles is a free iPhone/android smartphone app that uses your phone’s gps to track your run/walk/bike ride. This NYC based company (Charity Miles) is dedicated to raising money to be donated to charity, at the rate of $0.25/ mile walked or run and $0.10/mile biked. They have secured partners who are willing to donate money to any one of a multitude of “approved charities’ (identified in the app) based on the amount of miles run/walked/biked. They designed the app specifically to track everything and keep it all legit. I discovered them about several years ago and have been using the app ever since. I love it and the fact that A.) it does not cost me anything to use it and B.) even though it’s free, it still puts me in a position to raise funds for charity and make a difference. I love donating other people’s money.(ha) I know I don’t give it full justice, but suffice it to say this is a way to leverage the running you will be out there doing anyway to generate some funds and make a real impact. You can find their main website HERE. We are strongly encouraging all of The Sub-30 Virtual race participants to use it while they run the race. Instead of getting only my race miles, if we can get everybody’s miles it can add up quick and make a huge difference.
**There are a multitude of charities to select to receive the donations from your miles, but we as the Race Directors are suggesting Stand Up 2 Cancer. The fight against cancer has been brought to our doorstep on several occasions now as a group and we have sadly had too many reasons to support this in every way we can. This does not diminish the value of any of the other options, and you are free to choose whichever you wish, but every little bit helps and we are looking to have a big impact with this event.
